Going Green: Give America A Break

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for keeping Earth alive for as long as possible, especially considering I live here. But the whole concept of “going green” has gotten SO ANNOYING. I am getting a little fed up with the whole GAHHH!!!-DID-YOU-JUST-THROW-THAT-CAN AWAY-THAT-IS-RECYCLABLE-MATERIAL!!!!!! thing. It’s really starting to get on my nerves.

The whole world is “going green”, which is a fine thing, just not when every time I open a magazine they’re screaming “secrets” about how to go even GREENER than we already are. It’s in children’s programs, even! Entire episodes of Curious George have been dedicated to making sure kids know they’re killing trees with every drawing they create.

My friends and I even have a joke: every time someone throws ANYTHING away (let’s say it’s a plastic cup), we’ll say something like “Kendra! You’re killing the plastic trees!” Or metal trees or Styrofoam trees or whatever-the-thing-happens-to be-made-out-of trees.

I really am all for the environment, and let’s not go dumping oil into the oceans or anything, but the whole thing has just gotten really overdone and out of hand. All the irritating “reminders” and stuff are making people like me resent the whole issue. I’ll just throw away my aluminum cans and take thirty minute showers just to buck the “green” system!

Everyone already knows about being green. Do we have to keep dedicating entire episodes and magazine issues to the movement? Just let it sit for a while. Bring it up again for the next generation.

If we really wanted more “green” tips, we could Google it.

  1. I agree! There isn't even such thing as Global Warming. Sorry if you believe in that. And what would we do if we didn't have paper, and things made from trees? Even people in extreme poverty use trees! Like for houses and the bugs inside, and other things. They might fine the wood dead, but they probably have to cut trees down too, so that the wood will die...

  2. Omg, you know that Global Warning is fake, too?? I have the hardest time telling people that! I never thought I'd meet a non-Classical Conversations person who knew that! Lol!

  3. Seeing eco-friendly merchandise and tips everywhere is beginning to frustrate me. if they care so much about their danged paper I'm sure they could find another material to publish their "tips" on.

I never did pay much attention to people screaming "global warming". More "STFU, it's not happening in this lifetime. not to mention I doubt I'll have any kids around for if it ever DOES happen." Then I just get called pessimist.

  4. Haha, well, it does sound a bit pessimistic, but I completely agree with you on the other parts. I had no idea so many other people felt the same way I do!

  5. I don't get annoyed by "go green" campaigns, because I hardly watch any TV (just computer ^_^) and I don't usually read magazines and stuff like that.

about the global warming thing, though... I don't agree. isn't saying that it isn't real a bit like saying that the moon was never walked on? I mean, what exactly leads you to think that global warming is fake?
and, assuming it exists, it isn't a quick thing, but it doesn't take too long either: every year the temperature raises a bit. like I said, it's not very fast, but it's significant

now, I'm not sure (I'm really spaced out, I need to start paying more attention to what's going on around me), but isn't global warming like proved scientifically?

  6. If the concentratoin of carbon dioxide and otehr greenhouse gases were to increase too much, the earth would get too warm. (This is what global warming is, obviously, lol!) As civilization has become more industrialized, people have been burning a lot more fuel than they used to. Before the Industrial Revolution, people burned wood and coal to heat houses and businesses, but that was about it. As a result of the Industrial REvolution, however, people are burning coal, wood, natural gas and gasoline in huge quantities to generate electrical power, run manufacturing machiray, etc. As a result, we have been putting a lot more carbon dioxide into teh air than we used to.

This is where worries about global warming come from. Carbon dioxide is a participant in the greenhouse effect, which warms the planet. We also know that the amount of carbon dioxide in teh air has been rising steadily over the last 80 years or so. Well, increased carbon dioxide means an increased greenhouse effect, which will result in global warming right? Well, not exactly.

Although the fear of global warming IS based on scientific reasoning, it's actually more complex than most people think. If you look at most scientific graphs, you can tell that over the past 80 years, the amount of carbon has risen, then dropped back down to extremely low, where it is today. Every once in a while, the carbon dioxide level in the air seems to rise, but it always drops back down again. Thus, global warming isn't actually a problem at all. It's almost a hoax even.

Many people who talk abotu golab warming discuss the fact that in their area of teh world, the winters have been unusually warm over the past few years. They say global warming must be happening. This neglects teh fact that the entire world is often quite different from one person's corner of it. While one area of the world might be experiencing unusually warm winters, other parts of the world might be having abnormally cool summers. As a result, the *global* temperature does nont change very much, despite what might be happening in one region of it.

It is also common to hear that certain large ice sheets that have been the same size for a long time are now starting to melt. This is then used to conclude that the earth ahs a whole is getting warmer. However, this is not sound scientific reasoning. The fact taht an ice sheet is melting is only evidence that *the part of the world that holds teh ice sheet* is warming up. For example, a large ice sheet in the Antarctic Peninsula, the Larsen B ice shelf, has experienced a remarkable decline in size over the past few years. Some say that this is evidence for global warming. The problem is that the west Antarctic ice sheet has been *thickening* over the past few years. Thus, while the Antarctic Peninsula is getting warmer, the western part of the Antarctic is getting cooler. It turns out that temperature measurements of Antarctica indicate that overall, Antarctica has actually been cooling since the 1960's.

But, if you dig hard enough, you CAN find *some* evidence to show the earth is warming up as a whole. For example, land-based temperature measurements do show a slight warming trend, even over the past wenty years. The problem with these data, is that they ignore the 70% of the earth's surface, because they ignore what is happening over the oceans. When the entire globe is measured by satellites, no significant warming trend is seen.

Thus, to believe that global warming is occuring, you are forced to rely on the least reliable data and ignore the most reliable data. That's not good scientific practice.

Haha, WOW that was the longest comment ever. Sorry!! And I really, really, really, REALLY don't want to sound like a know-it-all, I just wanted to show you all the angles. What do you think?

(By the way, this information came primarily from "Exploring Creation with Physical Science" by Dr. Jay L. Wile.)

  7. wow
    you did yor research ^_^
I don't really know much of the facts. normally people believe what they learn at school and what most of the other people tell them, and so do I. what you said makes one think, though

haha =] I know, I was expecting such a comment and hoping for one

to be honest, and as selfish as that may seem, I don't really care much. I started having these kinda philosophical thoughts some time ago and... well, when I start thinking like that, I see life in a whole new perspective (cliche XD). one of the things that change, for example, is global warming: I just don't care. assuming it exists, I won't be here when humanity is at risk. carpe diem

  8. Haha, I do like to get facts to back stuff up. It's a weird sort of hobby for me. It feels kind of like debating almost.

So you philosophical thoughts led you to believe that it was better if you focused only on your generation? That's interesting, because it's what our grandparents and some of our parents thought. And that's what got us (America as least) in to this horrible economic struggle...lol!

Carpe diem is definitely good, but it's good to think about things in the long run, too. If your grandkids knew how little you cared about them, how do you think that would make them feel?

Not trying to irritate you or anything, I just enjoy discussing this kind of stuff :)

  9. I agree. I don't usually think like that. it's just when these I get these kinda philosophical thoughts
actually I can "turn my conscience off" pretty easily to think about these stuff (and, like me, and not just to think, many other people can. that's what "got us in to this horrible economic struggle")
    I know ^_^
